How the Cape Fear became famous for the wrong reason

In 2017, researchers revealed that a chemical plant upstream had been discharging GenX and related PFAS compounds - so-called forever chemicals - into the Cape Fear River for decades. The river is the primary drinking water source for the Wilmington area, and standard treatment at the time did not remove these compounds. It became one of the best-documented PFAS contamination cases in the country, and it is the reason so many local homeowners started asking what is really in their water.

What has genuinely improved

Credit where due: CFPUA responded with one of the most aggressive treatment upgrades of any utility in the country. Its granular activated carbon filters at the Sweeney plant came online in 2022, and public test results since then show most PFAS, including GenX, reduced to very low or non-detectable levels in treated city water. If someone tells you Wilmington city water is unchanged since 2017, they are selling fear.

What still gets through

Three things, honestly. First, ultrashort-chain PFAS: newer compounds like PFPrA are much harder for carbon filtration to capture, and CFPUA itself has flagged them as an ongoing concern while litigation with the upstream polluters continues. Second, chloramine: the disinfectant that keeps water safe in the pipes stays in your water at the tap, and unlike chlorine it does not dissipate if you let a glass sit. Third, hard water: mineral content that no utility is required to treat, which scales up water heaters, stains fixtures, and shortens appliance life across the region.

And if you are on a private well in Hampstead, Castle Hayne, Rocky Point, or Brunswick County, none of the utility improvements apply to you at all. Your water is whatever the aquifer delivers.

What a homeowner can actually do

For drinking water, a reverse osmosis system at the kitchen tap is the strongest residential defense against PFAS, including most short-chain compounds. For the whole house, a carbon-based whole-home system handles chloramine, taste, odor, and sediment at every faucet, and a softener stops the scale damage hard water does to your plumbing and appliances.
