WATER SOFTENER

No more scale.
Longer-living appliances.

Remove the calcium and magnesium that eat water heaters and dull glassware. Softer skin. Longer-lasting appliances. Half the soap and shampoo.

THE HARD WATER PROBLEM

Hard water is quietly wrecking your house.

Close-up of white limescale spots and hard-water residue on a chrome faucet handle

White scale around every faucet. Film on dishes and shower doors. Dry, itchy skin. Dull hair. Laundry that comes out stiff.

It's worse where you can't see it: scale coats the inside of your water heater, drops its efficiency 20-30%, and cuts years off its life. Same story for dishwashers and washing machines.

A softener fixes all of it at the source. Ion exchange swaps calcium and magnesium for a trace of sodium. The scale stops forming. Appliances last longer. Your skin and hair notice within a week.

Low-sodium and salt-free options available for anyone on a restricted diet or a septic system.

COMMON QUESTIONS

About water softening.

How do I know if I have hard water?

White scale around faucets, film on dishes, dry skin and hair, and shortened appliance lifespans are all signs. Wilmington's water typically has moderate to high hardness, though it varies by neighborhood and season. We measure your water's exact hardness during the free water test.

How does a water softener work?

Ion exchange. Hard water passes through resin beads that swap calcium and magnesium ions for sodium ions. The result is soft water. The resin regenerates itself using salt (sodium chloride), which you add to the brine tank periodically.

How much salt do I need to add?

A typical household adds one 40-pound bag of salt every 4-6 weeks. We'll show you the right salt type and level when we install. Most systems have a salt level indicator so you always know when to add more.

Is softened water safe to drink?

Yes, for most people. The sodium added is minimal. If you're on a low-sodium diet, we recommend pairing the softener with an RO drinking system at the kitchen tap to remove the sodium from drinking water.

Will it affect my water heater?

Positively. Scale from hard water is the leading cause of early water heater failure. A water softener can add 5-10 years to a water heater's lifespan and improve energy efficiency by 20-30%.
